Managing Your Septic Effectively

After struggling for quite some time with our septic system, I realized there might be a problem with the way we were approaching various aspects of plumbing. For starters, we didn't think too much of putting things down the garbage disposal, which created some serious issues later on down the road. We were left struggling with drains that just didn't work properly, and so we started carefully considering ways to change things. We talked with a plumber about septic system maintenance, and they had some tips that improved our experience. Check out this website for awesome tips on managing septic tanks.

Septic Tank System Services You Could Need Over The Life Of Your Septic System

If you have a septic tank, you'll need to have it serviced regularly. A septic tank isn't like the city sewer where you never have to worry about anything other than keeping your sewer line clean. A septic system comes with a lot of responsibility because if the system fails due to neglect, you face expensive repair bills and you might have to deal with sewage in your yard. Here are some septic tank system services you might need over the years.

Regular Tank Pumping

One of the most important septic tank system services is pumping out the tank when it starts to get full. If this isn't done, the tank can back up into your house and contaminate your home. Plus, the solids could clog the tank and drainfield. You'll want to pump out the tank on schedule before it gets too full so you can avoid creating problems that have to be repaired.

Periodic Tank Inspections

Your state sets regulations concerning septic systems, and one you'll need to comply with is the inspection requirement. Your tank will probably need to be inspected every few years. Find out the laws where you live so you stay in compliance. A septic tank service will check your tank for proper functioning and damage to determine if the tank is safe or if it needs repairs. The inspection is filed with your state, and if a crack is found and repairs are needed, the state gets that information as well. If damage is found, you'll have a time frame in which repairs need to be done.

Clean Out Tree Roots

Tree roots are a problem with septic systems and city sewer lines. The roots can clog drains, the tank, and the drainfield. Roots can often be removed with a hydro jet that can cut up the roots and flush them out of the system. Root-killing treatments might also be used to kill roots that haven't completely clogged the septic system. Plus, root killers can often keep tree roots away once they've been removed. You may want guidance from your septic system professional before adding root killer to your system.

Repair The System

Cracks in concrete aren't uncommon, and the same goes for septic tanks. If your septic service provider finds a crack in your tank when pumping it out, they may recommend filling it so the crack won't expand. The septic service may need to repair the tank, baffles, distribution box, drains, and drainfield at some point during the system's life. A drainfield can get clogged with solids and biofilm. The soil may need to be aerated if it gets compacted. Protecting the drainfield is important since a new drainfield might need to be installed if the first one fails.
